World Rugby denies claims All Blacks wouldn't budge

World Rugby has denied claims that the All Blacks were unwilling to have their last pool match against Italy in Toyota moved from Saturday to Monday because of Typhoon Hagibis. According to The Telegraph's Richard Bath, insiders said the All Blacks were not willing to consider a turnaround of just five days between their final pool game and their quarter-final. This claim was repeated in a series of tweets from former England hooker Brian Moore. But a World Rugby spokesperson said the claim was 'categorically untrue' and that the governing body had looked at all contingencies, ruling out delayed games. 'However, as outlined yesterday, it was impossible to provide a consistent and fair approach to all teams across the tournament that could guarantee safety, venue integrity or transport networks owing to the sheer scale of a super typhoon with a diameter of 1,400km,' a spokesman told Stuff.co.nz. 'This is fundamental. It would have been grossly irresponsible to endanger public or tournament safety.' Photo: BackpagePix
