Nyakane: It's not about me anymore

Bulls and Springbok prop TREVOR NYAKANE chats to RugbyRocks.com about what his family means to him.

How's fatherhood been for you?
It’s been amazing! Just being a dad and looking at love from a different perspective. To have someone who is fully relying on me is a responsibility I'm enjoying. I need to do the best I can for Skylar.

What have you enjoyed about being a dad?
Skylar's a bundle of joy. I’m spending more time with her now and I enjoy watching her grow. She’s getting a bit of personality and is quite cheeky! She gives me a reason to wake up every morning. She’s special and I’d never trade that for anything in the world!

What has fatherhood taught you?
It has definitely taught me not to be selfish. It’s not about me anymore but my family. I have to put Skylar and my family first. Fatherhood has made me a better man, I’d say.

What did you do for your wife, Gavaza, on Mother's Day?
You can’t really do much because of the lockdown. But I made her a nice breakfast and we had a picnic later in the day.

What does Gavaza mean to you?
She’s been my pillar. I draw my energy from her. She’s been there through thick and thin. She has been really supportive. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn’t be where I am today. She is a strong woman. And she gave me the greatest gift ever, Skylar.
