Lukhanyo Am is likely to captain a Springbok team missing several first-choice players in the Rugby Championship.
According to a source of the Sunday Times, SA Rugby director of rugby Rassie Erasmus is thinking of taking a much younger squad to Australia.
This is due to the fact that while New Zealand and Australia's players have been playing rugby for months, the game has yet to restart in South Africa.
'They think the team will be ill-prepared for a tough tournament like the Rugby Championship, especially Tests against the All Blacks,' the source said.
'They'll take a younger group, with Lukhanyo Am in the running to be the captain and they'll be looking at guys like Curwin Bosch, Aphelele Fassi and a guy like Sanele Nohamba is certainly not out of the running.'
The source said Erasmus would have preferred for the Boks to miss the Rugby Championship, but SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux and others 'believe the team should travel because of considerable financial considerations'.
Erasmus will therefore use the Rugby Championship as a chance to develop squad depth ahead of next year's British & Irish Lions series and the 2023 World Cup, while protecting the Springboks' standing in world rugby.
