MFUNDO NDHLOVU tells RugbyRocks.com about his studies and why his mother is his greatest motivation.
I’m currently finishing my second year of a BCom Business Management degree through Unisa.
I’ve always loved the idea of being a businessman. I grew up reading about Bill Gates, Thomas Edison, Richard Branson and many other businessmen and entrepreneurs. I’ve always wanted to be like one of them, if not better.
That motivated me to pursue my course and is still motivating me to finish it.
Personally, balancing my studies and rugby isn't difficult at all, it just requires a lot of discipline.
It takes a lot to study after a long day of training, but that's the ultimate test of how much you truly enjoy what you are studying.
My mother is my biggest motivation. She’s a teacher and has taught me a lot, not only as a parent but as a friend, mentor and role model.
She told me to always see the bigger picture and have a plan B and C – not because I think plan A is going to fail but because 'if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail'. That’s one of her favourite sayings.
My mother has unconventional ways of motivating me, which is why she’s my greatest motivation.
My name means ‘education’ and 'knowledge', so it kind of creates an expectation for me to live up to it!
In all seriousness, knowledge is power. It's something no one can ever take away from me and I can use it for the rest of my life.
Getting an education can ensure I succeed after my rugby career, which is why it’s so important to me.
